Maiji tracks, disenchantement rewound

a few pics of an afternoon on the Maiji train tracks, courtesy of Hu, who found a hole in the fence.

the up side of the disenchantment phase is rediscovering all the things you’d loved about this place to begin with. I feel like a little kid again, exploring with fresh eyes. small minded people still irk me, but that’s never been china specific ; )

wandered through a fair / market in town for the day. saw a girl on her back spinning a table with her feet, no pics as climb and squirm as I might I couldn’t get away from the throngs of bodies blocking my view.

bought tickets for what I’d been told was a classical erhu concert but was in fact some sort of mass erhu lesson. professional woman talked about how happy everything was for an hour (fortunately for me she kept saying almost exactly the same thing over and over so I eventually understood every word ; ), intermission, students came on stage to play and be critiqued. a little miffed at my friend for shall we say modifying the truth ever so slightly, but I had some fun giving english lessons to a 12 year old boy while she droned on (this is apparently not rude in the slightest in china, so when in rome) and I did get to hear her play for 7 whole seconds, so it wasn’t 140 kuai completely down the toilet ;-)

later that afternoon experienced a prayer service at a buddhist temple. didn’t want to get close, I draw eyes whether I like it or not, but the beautiful sounds of uplifted voices reached me all the same.

erhu lessons are going well, I no longer sound like a dying cow. however I remain a bit of an idiot, last lesson I told my teacher 4 excercises in a week was way too much so of course this week he gave me 6. : )

preparing for exams, kids are in a tizzy. preparing for christmas, I’m trying to figure out where I can cut a tree down without getting chased away with a large stick.

so many outstanding moments this week but I’m having a hard time sorting them out, it’s just a blur of smiles and strangely wonderful conversations and bizarre snapshots in my mind.

I can’t believe it’s almost christmas
